It’s been one of those weeks. One where your to-do list screams at you to stay inside, tackle new blog content, catch up on laundry, and reorganize the pantry for the hundredth time. But even more so, it’s been a week where your heart nudges you to hug your child a little closer, soak in extra rays of sun, enjoy the fullness of everyday moments, and be still with God.
How often do we let the monotony and busyness of life thwart the hidden beauty found in the very same mundane moments? Most of us, including myself, are too easily preoccupied with “what’s next” instead of realizing the blessing in the present. We all need perspective every now and then.
Instead of begrudgingly making your bed each morning, you can realize how fortunate you are to sleep in a warm bed in the first place. You can either dream of the day where scrubbing slimy fingerprints off appliances and windows are history — or stop to appreciate the joy of young children playing and exploring in your home. You have the choice, I have the choice, to stop mentally rehearsing to-do lists when we ought to be engaging and growing spiritually at a small group bible study.
One day you could lose your home along with your warm place to sleep at night. Your children may move away for university to start a new adventure of their own. Or perish the thought — tragedy may knock at your doorstep and steal a child from you. Eventually even our religious freedom to study the bible together and share faith on social media may be outlawed just as it will be for Russia this week.
To-do lists are important. They can help us get to a destination, whether that’s a clean house or dream career. However, don’t let the to-do lists for a better future overshadow the blessings you’ve been given today.
Now it's your turn.
Is a jam-packed to-do list clouding the blessings in your life? How do plan to change your mindset moving forward? Share your ideas in the comment section below!
